Dry Shampoos: Busting Myths and How To Use Them

We are officially into 2021 and our moody hair days are not far in sight. Managing the frizz and dryness, not to mention the lacklustre texture of ill-tended hair can be a nightmare even if you are still working from home. However, thanks to technology and research, there are various detours you can take to manage unruly hair and step out as flawless as ever. For those who are perpetually troubled by greasy scalps and sticky hair can thank their stars (or science) for dry shampoos! They are carefully formulated to eliminate greasiness from your hair and give you the depth and bounce you desire. Here are some myths that are absolutely untrue about dry shampoos.

Table of Contents

1. Dries Your Hair

The word ‘dry’ prefixed can give rise to doubts and suspicions of whether dry shampoos can be drying or not. However, although all dry shampoos contain alcohol, it does not dry your hair out completely. Using appropriate conditioners and hair masks will do the deed.

2. Cleanses Hair

Dry shampoos are used to get rid of excessive greasiness of your hair. They are NOT hair cleansers and replacements for shampoos. Washing your hair with cleansers and conditioners is still mandatory even if you use dry shampoos. These products just give you longer time between hair washes.

3. No-No For Curly Hair

This is a common myth that dry shampoos are unsuitable for textured or curly hair. Application of the shampoo lightly coats the curls and provides a thin layer that locks in the moisture and prevents tangling. However, care must be taken and should not be used in excess as curls need moisture to stay tamed and excessive dry shampoo can cause drying.

4. Makes Hair Ashy And Greyish

Most dry shampoos are white and powder-based which can pose an issue of white or grey deposits on dark-coloured hair. However, many beauty companies are now formulating their dry shampoos keeping dark hair and quality in consideration that suits everybody. Look for products that are designed for dark hair or for hair that are coloured. Don’t over apply to the follicles, it might get visible.

How To Use

Dry shampoos are fairly simple to use. Hold the bottle at least six inches away from your hair and spray onto the area you feel is the oiliest—scalp, nape or the ends. Do not over-spritz or overuse as it. It is merely to ease the greasiness.

Take note: Dry shampoos are only to be used on dry hair. Allow the spray to settle on your scalp and follicles, to absorb the excess oil.
